International Day for Eradication of Violence against Women celebrated in GB

GILGIT, Nov 24: International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women was celebrated in Gilgit Press Club in collaboration with various civil society organizations. Banners inscribed with demand for ending violence against women were displayed and speakers belonging to various civil society organisations, trade unions, market committees and boy scouts stressed upon the need to initiate a mass awareness program for eradication of violence against women.

Assistant Commissioner Gilgit, Momin Jan urged upon the civil society organisations to take steps for the Eradication of violence against women. He said violence against women can be significantly reduced by Education, Forums and Seminar and urged upon the Print and Electronic media to play their role in community awareness campaign on the issue of domestic violence.

The celebration concluded with a candlelit vigil outside Gilgit Press Club to show men’s pledge to end violence against women. NGOs, Media, Bar Councils, Police, Local Administration, Students and Teachers, Trade Unions and Market committees, and Boys Scouts participated in this event.

The day was being celebrated to mark the White Ribbon Day in Pakistan since 2006.

The celebration was jointly organised by Publishing Extension Network (PEN), Himalayan Grassroots Women’s Natural Resource Management Association (HIMAQANTI) Aga Walidain Informed Parents and Rupani Foundation.

    NAACC Celebrated World AIDS Week in Gilgit-Baltistan

    (GILGIT): In connection with the world AIDS day, Northern Areas AIDS Control Consortium-(NAACC) observed the world AIDS day (WAD) campaign 2009 as world AIDS week in Gilgit.
    The event continued through out the week with an objective to show solidarity and commitments with the international community to end this ailment.
    This year the slogan of the WAD was “Take the Lead, Stop AIDS-Keep the promise”, in this regard NAACC in collaboration of UNAIDS-Pakistan organized a number of Awareness raising, Capacity building and Sensitization events for youth groups, key stakeholders and general public.

    Throughout the WAD campaign NAACC tried to spread the information for awareness about the hazards of HIV & AIDS.

    In this connection the first event took place on 1st December by holding a youth seminar. The speakers of the session were Mr. Ejaz Ahmed Khan president-NAACC and Gen sec NAACC Mr. Ishtiaq Ahmed. Around 70 youths participated in the event.

    The Second Event was held at Karakuram International University under the Title “sensitization Seminar on Take the lead, stop AIDS and keep the promise” Acting vice Chancellor KIU Dr. Ahsan Elahi was the Chief guest who delivered a thought provoking speech, stressing upon the students and faculty members to hold positive behaviors and follow Islamic teaching and code of life and prevent themselves from HIV & AIDS dilemma. Dr. Abdul-Latif Coordinator Gilgit-Baltistan AIDS Control Programme described in details the technical and clinical aspects of the disease while prof.Ejaz Ahmed gave his presentation on” Involvement of youths in HIV & AIDS interventions. Mr. Ishtiaq Ahmed and Zaffer Ahmed spoke about the social aspect and stressed to avoid stigma & discrimination associated with HIV & AIDS. More than hundred students and faculty participated in the event.

    Third event of week long campaign was the Capacity Building Workshop for Stakeholders held on 5th December and highlighted various tools, techniques and knowledge management skills to prevent HIV & AIDS from the country as well as keep the region of Gilgit-Baltistan an AIDS free region. Twenty five stakeholders from different walks of life including media, civil society, trade unions and public representatives participated in the workshop.

    Some other tools for information dissemination and sensitization were used i.e IEC material, Banners display, slide presentations and group consultations was the part of Campaign.
